Is your telemedicine benefit working?

Video and audio access to a physician who can diagnose many common illnesses or injuries on a 24/7 basis has become a prominent feature among health plans. Virtual care can offer a convenient and lower cost option for quickly being seen by a board-certified physician. For late night or off-hour issues, rural areas, or people who don’t have the time, interest or ability to see a doctor in-person, virtual and telephonic options can offer an alternative to urgent care or emergency room visits.

The problem lies in generating awareness and participation in a telemedicine program to produce meaningful results. Participants are often unaware or wary of virtual care and these added plan services can go underutilized. To increase awareness and engagement consistent and compelling communications are needed, as well as working with service providers to best understand barriers to care.
